Research Focus
My research focuses on utilizing genetic engineering techniques to enhance the biomining capabilities of Gluconobacter oxydans. This bacterium is known for its metabolic versatility and ability to oxidize a wide range of substrates. I aim to improve its efficiency in extracting valuable metals and minerals from challenging substrates such as ultramafic rocks, asteroids, Martian and Lunar simulants. By optimizing its genetic pathways responsible for bioleaching, my work seeks to develop a robust biological tool for resource extraction in extreme environments, with applications both on Earth and in space exploration.
