Joshua Umansky-Castro

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

Overview

Joshua Umansky-Castro is a PhD Candidate in Aerospace Engineering, with a concentration in Dynamics and Control. A member of Mason Peck’s Space Systems Design Studio, Joshua manages the Alpha CubeSat mission and conducts research on the design of ChipSats (gram scale satellite-on-a-chip technology). His research centers around applications of ChipSats for planetary exploration, specifically light sailing and atmospheric entry, descent, and landing (EDL). He is a GEM and Sloan fellow, as well as a recipient of the Cornell Colman fellowship.

Joshua earned his B.S.E. from Princeton University in 2017. Since then, he has devoted much time to engineering education, teaching Aerospace Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore, and mentoring LigerSat, the first Cambodian CubeSat team, in Phnom Penh. Joshua has also been involved with Engineers without Borders for the past 10 years, leading water supply projects in the Peruvian Andes, and now mentoring student teams from the Princeton and Cornell chapters. Through his dissertation work, he has also supervised the research of over 70 undergraduate, MEng, and MS students.
